Quaoar was discovered by astronomer Chad Trujillo on 5 June , when he identified it in images acquired by the Samuel Oschin Telescope at Palomar Observatory the night before.

Two possible orbits for Weywot have been determined from the observations: the first is a prograde orbit with an orbital inclination of 14 degrees, the second a retrograde orbit with an orbital inclination of 30 degrees degrees ; the other parameters are very similar between the two orbits. It was calculated that a flyby mission to Quaoar could take Quaoar would be 41 to 43 AU from the Sun when the spacecraft arrives.
